Tech Daily: AI Search Collapses Referral Traffic, Chip Supply Crisis Deepens, Google Launches TPU Satellite
Reddit loses 29% market value as Google's AI Mode stops sending traffic; HBM shortages persist through 2030 while Intel crashes 30%; Google puts TPUs in orbit with Project Suncatcher. The infrastructure underpinning AI is cracking at every layer.

Three stories. One pattern. The infrastructure underpinning AI is cracking at every layer — distribution, silicon, and now physics itself.
1. Google's AI Mode Breaks the Web's Traffic Model
Reddit's stock fell 29% on Friday — its worst single-day drop since going public — after CEO Steve Huffman warned that Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode have cut search referrals by more than 1 million per week on average in October. "The reality is, AI Mode does not drive traffic," Huffman said on the earnings call. "Not for us, and not to anybody, as far as I know."
The numbers are brutal: US daily active uniques dropped 2% to 50.7 million — the first decline since Reddit's 2024 IPO. Logged-out US users fell 4% year-over-year. Reddit expects total daily users to shrink by a low double-digit percentage in Q4 if referral declines continue.
This isn't just Reddit. Publishers saw referral traffic from Google fall 43% YoY for large publishers, 39.9% for medium, and 59.8% for small publishers between June 2025-2026 (Chartbeat). Google itself admitted AI Mode ads have "lower monetization." The search giant is crawling Reddit "as hard as ever" — it still wants the content — but the answers now stay on Google.
Reddit's response: mandatory logins for all users, starting with international tests in Q4. They're also building a "For You" feed and AI-generated short videos to become a "direct, sticky, daily destination." The open web's distribution model — search sends users to sources — is being dismantled in real time.

2. The Silicon Supply Crisis Has No Near-Term Fix
While AI demand explodes, the physical substrate can't keep up:
- HBM (High Bandwidth Memory): SK hynix expects supply constraints through 2030. DRAM and HBM volumes sold out through 2029. Samsung says tight supply through 2028; its 2027 HBM allocation is already spoken for. China's CXMT plans HBM3E production at 20-30% yields.
- Advanced Packaging (CoWoS): TSMC reportedly considering a 20% price increase for CoWoS as AI demand strains capacity. ASE forecasts doubling advanced-packaging revenue in 2027. Nvidia has reserved the majority of TSMC's CoWoS capacity.
- Anthropic's IPO filing explicitly warned: HBM shortages and limited TSMC manufacturing capacity could constrain AI expansion.
Then Intel crashed 30% on Friday — its worst day ever — wiping $146B in market value. The company forecast revenue $1B+ below estimates and said it won't reach positive cash flow this year. PC demand weakening, AI buildout costs soaring, memory prices surging as suppliers shift to HBM. The rout dragged down AMD, Arm, Qualcomm, Nvidia, Broadcom, Micron (4-12%), plus ASML, TSMC, Samsung, and server makers Dell, HPE, Super Micro (6-11%).
The US government — Intel's largest shareholder at 10% — took a ~$12B hit on its stake. Credit default swaps on Intel debt surged to all-time highs.

3. Google Puts TPUs in Orbit: Project Suncatcher
On October 1, a SpaceX Falcon 9 launched a satellite equipped with Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) — the first step in Project Suncatcher, an experimental initiative exploring AI data centers in space. The logic: space offers free cooling (radiative to deep space), abundant solar power, and no real estate constraints. Latency to ground is the trade-off, but for training and batch inference, it may not matter.
This isn't sci-fi. Oracle will offer Google TPUs through its cloud starting 2027. Broadcom's XPUs and networking will support Anthropic's infrastructure under a $63B financing deal. Meta is expanding Nvidia and AMD deployments. The compute buildout is moving from "where can we put racks?" to "where can we put racks that physics doesn't fight us on?"

The Builder's View
Building APKLab and BusGoCM from Cameroon teaches you to watch infrastructure, not hype. When distribution breaks (Google keeping traffic), when silicon chokes (HBM/CoWoS sold out through 2030), and when the biggest chipmaker crashes 30% in a day — that's not noise. That's the system telling you the current architecture is hitting hard limits.
The opportunities aren't in wrapping another API. They're in:
- Local-first, offline-capable tools (Gemini Live offline mode on Android is a signal)
- Compute-efficient models that don't need HBM3E
- Distribution you own — email, direct app, community — because search referrals are going to zero
- Infrastructure plays that solve the physics: cooling, power, packaging, memory
The next wave won't be "AI for X." It'll be "X that works when AI infrastructure is constrained."
